Most lost games are not lost on the opener. They are lost on guesses two and three, spent confirming something already known instead of eliminating something unknown.
It is tempting to read a row of grey tiles as a wasted turn. It is the opposite: five greys remove five letters from every remaining candidate at once, which is often a larger cut than two yellows would have made. Track what you have ruled out as deliberately as what you have found.
A yellow letter is known to be in the word and known not to be in that slot. The common mistake is to re-guess it in the same position out of habit. Deliberately place it somewhere new, and prefer a position that also tests a letter you have not tried.
If you are three guesses in with several live candidates that differ by one letter — the classic -OUND family of BOUND, FOUND, HOUND, MOUND, POUND, ROUND, SOUND, WOUND — guessing them one at a time can burn every remaining turn. In normal mode you may instead guess a word that tests several of those leading consonants at once, even though it cannot be the answer. That single throwaway guess often converts a coin flip into a certainty. Hard Mode forbids this, which is exactly what makes it hard.
Play the percentages rather than trying to win in three. A guaranteed solve on guess five beats a one-in-four chance on guess three.
